X79 bclk overclocking help
Hey everyone, just installed my new PC with these specs: GPU 980 TI, CPU E5 2687W, 16GB RAM, and a 850 watt Corsair cooler. I'm not getting the performance I expected in CSGO with the 980 TI. I tried overclocking my 8-core Xeon using BCLK, but whenever I go above 103.00 MHz it doesn't work. I'm curious if this approach is safe and whether the Xeon could be a bottleneck compared to the GPU. Also, should I consider upgrading to a 4930k or 4960x?
Increasing the BCLK can cause serious damage, potentially destroying the motherboard. In earlier Intel models, they permitted BCLK overclocking. However, eventually they fixed the issue by synchronizing the BCLK with a standard clock for all parts, including PCIe, which should run at 100 MHz. Raising the BCLK accelerates every component, and while some handle it better than others, pushing it down to 103 or 104 MHz risks damaging the board. I’d exercise caution with this approach.
The Xeons on the X58 were the final generation that could be overclocked by adjusting the multiplier. For the x79 series, they are essentially non-overclockable. If you're seeking higher performance, it's usually wiser to opt for enthusiast CPUs rather than Xeons. Additionally, depending on the cost of a new CPU, it might even be more sensible to upgrade to a modern model.
