I'm looking to switch from my current b450 motherboard to a newer x570 model, as those fit my existing R5 2600 CPU. I heard some advice against buying from MSI, but I’m not sure why. Are there any solid budget options under $200 that might work?

Not B550 because it doesn't meet your needs.

Not accurate, every maker offers both strong and weaker boards. It really comes down to the specific model. The MSI B550 Unify-X performs well, and the B550 AORUS PRO V2 is a solid option as well. For those on a "budget," the B550 chipset is worth considering since it provides better value for the cost.

If your budget allows, an ASUS TUF X570 is a great choice, but it might be overlooked in favor of the B550 because of its higher price point.

My processor is a Ryzen 5 2600, but the 2000-series chips aren't compatible with the B550 motherboards.

Consider the X570 Aorus Elite, X570 Tuf Gaming or MSI X570 Unify. Pick the model with traits that match your requirements, as all are solid mid-range options.

You already own a B450 Tomahawk Max, upgrading it would be quite unusual. No CPU fits all boards, but the AM4 socket is the most widely supported and usually suggested for budget builds. Avoid spending extra money—AM4 is becoming obsolete. The Ryzen 5000 line was AMD's final release for this socket.

EDIT: @MorganMLGman and @Downkey, please verify your original specs before giving advice. He mentioned his current setup, which isn't ideal for a dead socket. Also, the B450 remains compatible with every modern CPU (at least in theory, after some BIOS updates; MSI MAX series boards, especially early adopters, have strong support).

The upgrade is needed because my board has a CPU error light issue and it doesn’t shut down correctly. Check out the post I wrote earlier for more details.
