I hope this time things will change. AMD mentioned the socket won’t shift for several years. I didn’t talk about Zen 3, which would come in about two years, whereas Zen 2 is likely out within a year, maybe even by Q2 2018.
And five years ahead looks like a solid life span—2022 or 2023. I own a Celeron built in 2005 on an ASRock, and I guess it’s still running well by today’s rules. The GPU failed in 2013, and the whole setup hasn’t been used since then. That’s about seven years of operation, so I think modern parts would handle it easily.
I notice a lot of guesswork and overly confident replies here, but there don’t seem to be any references to reliable data sources supporting this. While it’s known that Ryzen 2 works on current AM4 boards, I haven’t found anyone—whether from AMD, board partners, or industry groups like TH, Anandtech, or Guru3d—confirming Zen 2 7nm support. If you have any details that aren’t widely known, feel free to share them and I can help spread the information. People I’ve spoken with at TH, Anandtech and Guru3d all say they haven’t verified the 7nm chips yet. I’m treating those “yes” statements as speculation until there’s concrete evidence.

It's true that Zen 2 offers a substantial improvement, particularly with the potential for four times more cores. I'm confused about why this wouldn't make buying an AMD CPU unnecessary, given how Intel keeps releasing new versions every couple of generations.
