WWDC 2023 Apple's Reality Pro OS nearly became xrOS
The developer session for "Build spatial experiences with RealityKit" occurred prior to the name change from xrOS to visionOS. Around 0:58, the speaker mentions "... and especially on xrOS...", indicating a recent marketing adjustment after documentation videos were already being produced. xrOS was clearly just a temporary name. Apple wouldn't adopt such a label for a consumer item.
Since apple has never adopted a current technology name and created entire brands around it before, that's why they refer to it as 'phone,' 'pod,' and 'tunes.'
It would surprise me if this were anything beyond a temporary example. The name offers little insight into the item, and it doesn't sound as smooth as "iOS." This isn't an established label either. VisionOS feels much more in line with current Apple offerings.
