I've always wondered why Macs lack window snapping, yet discovered Microsoft patented it in 2005. Although patents expire after 20 years, it seems Apple might be planning for it by 2025.

Linux distributions include window snapping features. You can purchase an app (I did, it cost about $5 one-time) to enable this on macOS. If a patent prevented Apple from doing it, it’s unclear how other OSes or paid programs would succeed. I believe Apple simply doesn’t want to add window snapping, which is why they haven’t.

It seems Microsoft probably doesn't think pursuing them is worthwhile. Check out the patent here: https://patents.google.com/patent/US10592080B2/en

Similar to other Linux distributions, window snapping is available, and you can purchase third-party solutions for it.

I've noticed something intriguing about how people use apps on different operating systems. On macOS, users often keep applications open in windows, whereas Windows users tend to lock their apps behind a wall. This behavior dates back to Windows 95 and isn't just a recent trend. It likely stems from the difference between the maximize button on Windows and the zoom feature in OS X. It feels a bit ironic when macOS embraces full-screen apps and spaces. I wonder if more flexibility could be offered for multi-app layouts. Personally, I haven't explored them much, but it's possible some users do.
