I own a fairly recent Windows 11 laptop and all the initial updates worked without issues, but the latest preview and cumulative update dragged on for over an hour. Each time it started at around 69% on the Windows Update page, then after restarting it would show 'preparing update, 0%' for some time before the updates finally installed. My other PC managed to install both updates within about fifteen minutes last month. I've tried the Windows Update troubleshooter several times and run a disk check, but everything seems fine—it's brand new and the smaller updates like security or Intel drivers install quickly.

I understand... the preview updates are just early versions of what's coming next month... so you're seeing the same changes twice. Try to avoid getting previews unless PC provides them to you.
I figured it was a preview when I realized I missed the earlier one, and then you mentioned Preview.
You should be okay. Previews might lack some features, which means the changes in the last patch weren't included yet.

Search for powershell
Open as admin
Paste this command into the window:
Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth
Press enter
Then type SFC /scannow
Press enter
Restart PC if SFC fixes any files, since some repairs need a restart to take effect
The first command cleans the files that SFC uses and updates system files
SFC = System File Checker. The first command runs DISM
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...windows-11
I can't say the last update was any slower than usual. It depends on what's being changed
Could it have been using the latest version of 11, perhaps a version update? It takes a while, but you'll notice a color change during startup—different from normal logon.

I attempted to do that following the preview update, but unfortunately it didn’t change anything on patch Tuesday. Appreciate the effort.

navigate to settings/windows update/update history
what version did you install last?
the first cumulative update was designed to capture any missing files, so let's check what you have. It may not provide much detail.
you can click learn more next to them, which should direct you to a page showing the changes...

It could be that these adjustments require some time to complete. Particularly if they aren't handled promptly. This update didn't significantly affect my PC's performance, as it was the last one I received. The extent of the changes will determine the impact.

That one has been installed too. Okay thanks, as long as the updates are installing then I suppose nothing much more I can do. It’s an MSI laptop.

If you possess both KB, then I'm uncertain. It contains that quote in the most recent update too. It's mainly about significant updates. Keep an eye on it for the next update cycle coming up next month.

Okay cheers, appreciate it. If it happens again next month what should I do then? Not sure there’s much else I can do and am thinking if the updates install just live with it?
