Windows Update, Version 2004 has just appeared. I need to upgrade but I’m on limited data—about 2 GB per day—and my daily usage is around 1 GB for games and basic needs. Can I download the update in smaller parts since it’s 3.77 GB?

You might try a limited data plan, which would prevent it from reaching its full capacity. However, this would also halt your internet use elsewhere unless you could pause downloads or stop restarts by using a firewall. You could check this by testing a 100mb metered connection—if it stops, then blocking the firewall should prevent it from starting again once you unmeter your connection.

Your connection is already limited, which is why the update option appears. You can choose to download and install it or skip it. To block the update, adjust your firewall settings—follow the instructions carefully. Yes, you should keep your PC connected for the duration needed for the update to complete.

I believe your metered connection is managed by your phone provider rather than Windows. Otherwise, you likely got the intended meaning. Make sure all web browsers and internet-connected devices are disabled. In Windows Settings, navigate to Network & Internet, then check the metered connection option. Enable it. On the properties page, select "Set a data limit to help control data usage on this network." Choose the blue option and click it to return. You’ll see a screen with "Data Usage" under properties—set your monthly limit as desired, for example 200MB per month. Click "Update" and it should respect your limit, stopping once reached. I recommend checking your firewall settings to block Windows updates, as this is my advice. This should let the update run within your 200MB daily cap. It might be a better approach, but I’m just sharing my thoughts. Let me know if it works for you.

Instead of searching for places with free Wi-Fi, you could simply download the content directly.

It's a personal computer, but why bring such a big setup to public areas? In India, where internet speeds are still limited in many places, I’d have to spend a day there. Plus, because of the ongoing pandemic, the country is under lockdown.

Why bother updating to 2004 now? It's still in beta with many issues. I hold off on major releases by at least 75 days since I don't want the new features. Think you're using version 1909—stick with it.

I'm using version 1909 right now. Microsoft is phasing out support for older Windows 10 releases when they update, which isn't an issue at the moment but will become a concern later. Many games are also refusing to run on those older versions.

I established a data cap. It should have halted at 100 MB, but instead it continued and displayed a warning to disconnect your Ethernet in the action center. Is the system malfunctioning?

You can cut off your link, apply the firewall block, then rejoin. Once you reconnect, you’ll get back online, but the update won’t proceed automatically. I’m frustrated because the metered limits just inform you without doing anything useful—it doesn’t alter what you need to do. The main issue is whether pausing the connection will stop the update or just reset it to the beginning.
