I've created an Ubuntu USB and it's working fine. Right now I'm using Ubuntu itself. I removed some of my iTunes library, so I can reinstall it without moving files. Also, I can't access my USB HDD in Ubuntu because it's an exFAT drive, but that should be okay. I'll delete a few more and try again... Should I attempt it with the HDD connected or not? Thanks a lot for all your help and replies!
The process will take some time. Having free space is necessary for it to work. It's disappointing you're trying to revert earlier changes, but giving it a shot is the right approach. This isn't a quick task.
I'll leave it as is. I don't want to revert to an earlier state. It's already updating during startup. I was planning to make changes, but the PC is restarting repeatedly now. I hope it resolves itself.
I don’t have patience, but try your best. Windows can restart often due to certain automatic actions. I’m hoping it gets resolved soon. Keep in mind the free space—if Windows claims there’s not enough, then it really isn’t. No matter where you upload your files. After setup, Windows retains old files and adds new ones. It sometimes keeps the entire system folder even after upgrading. You’ll need significantly more space than just 16 GB. It might work now, but it won’t be enough for future upgrades.
You can also prepare your external HDD as a bootable drive using Ubuntu. Alternatively, start Ubuntu from a connected USB stick with the external HDD attached and you'll gain access. If needed, download Macrium Reflect, generate a Rescue USB, boot from it, and image your entire system onto the external drive. This way, you'll be able to recover it later if anything fails.
the HDD is visible in ubuntu, but apparently it's not able to read exfat formatted drives by default. I'm sure there's a work-around for this. And if i do fix it, i will be sure to use those to make an image of my system. thanks for the tip... By the way, if the restoration doesn't work by itself, would I be able to use the windows media creation tool to repair windows?
If the fix won't help, you might want to try all options. Keep in mind—upgrading requires a lot of available space.
