Windows Update isn't working properly on your new computer.
A few weeks back I started playing Witcher 3 and found the game running very slowly with frequent lag and dropping frames. After restarting, it crashed completely on the second try, leaving me with a dark screen and a reboot. The Event Viewer reported a crash in the graphics card/driver. Before logging in, it warned about pending updates. I checked Windows Update and found an update for "Steelseries - Aps," installed it, and rebooted. Then the PC froze for over an hour on a message saying "Working on updates, do not turn your PC off" with no progress. I revisited the Event Viewer, which was full of errors like "DCOM got error 1115" and a failed Windows Module Installer. I also tried updating other programs, but they kept getting stuck during downloads at 4%, then progressing to 0% and then appearing installed again. Between reboots, the screen would freeze at the updates page for 60–70 minutes, but shutting down worked. I ran sfc /scannow and DISM tools, but they didn’t help much. The Cbs.log would show activity, yet the process kept stalling with errors like "progress gets further, but always stops." I attempted to use the WU troubleshooter, which kept suggesting a restart was needed even when none existed. After clearing the WU download folder, it still stuck at the updates screen for a long time. When I entered safe mode with networking, DISM and Windows Update tools functioned, but without internet access because the network card driver was disabled. I tried following Microsoft’s instructions online, but the WU reset didn’t fix it. Running the Windows 11 upgrade tool seemed uncertain to work given how broken the WU was. I’m at a loss—this is my first fresh Windows 11 install, and I’m not sure what to do besides a full reinstall, which I’d rather avoid since everything was set up recently. Anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this?
