I'm dealing with a Windows 8.1 system that got infected three days ago. The security center stopped working after using Avast and Malwarebytes. The virus disappeared two days later, but your PC won’t boot without the product key. You tried running sfc /scannow from the command prompt, which said it rebooted successfully—though nothing seems to be happening now.

I would save what I can and restart it.

I reached out to a Microsoft technician who confirmed the issue. It seems my Windows was already damaged, thank you for your assistance. I shouldn’t have lost confidence in you—brb re-format!

Remember a detail. An antivirus alerts you about a virus before you run a file with it. If infected, it can eliminate the threat while leaving files and settings untouched. It stops the infection but doesn’t fix the system—just removes the virus to prevent further damage to your system or network. When a virus is already present, it’s wise to back up your data, reset the system, and reinstall the operating system.
