Set up remote access by directing traffic via your router. The standard port is 3389 unless specified otherwise.

In short, after installing Server 2012, you just need to enable remote desktop and open port 3389 via your router. Regarding multiple hard drives, it depends on the setup—some configurations support more than one drive, while others may require specific arrangements.

You'll discover it's simpler to arrange a VPN when setting up those drives, keeping both devices connected instead of using alternative sharing methods.

I understand, the only VPNs I know are those that hide or alter your IP address. Are you asking about something different?

Distribute the directories to the network, establish a VPN via your router, enable the laptop to connect through the VPN externally, and the shared folders will become reachable.

The system will either allow access from the network directly or require each device in the network to connect via the VPN.

The drives will be accessible over the network based on the configuration (domain, homegroup or personal login). The VPN will enable a PC to show up in the local network even when connected outside. This allows the PC to view the shared drives.

This clarifies a few points, thank you. I plan to configure it first through the homegroup and then expand from there later. Appreciate the help!
