Hey there, I’ve had to swap out my motherboard, RAM, and CPU recently. I know I need a fresh Windows 10 key since the board changed, but I’m on an NVMe drive and have some questions about getting back up. Here’s what I’m thinking:

1) The files from the first Windows 10 install should still be there on the NVMe, right?
2) Installing Windows again might double the space because it creates new copies of folders and files?
3) I have a lot of important data on the NVMe—what’s the safest way to back it up?
4) Can I make a bootable Windows 10 USB from a Mac?

Let me know if you want more details on any of these steps.

OS updates frequently succeed, yet occasionally they fail. I’d proceed with a test. If it starts up correctly, you might be able to persuade Microsoft to send the license via phone, though this isn’t guaranteed.

I’m fine with purchasing a fresh Windows 10 license, but I have concerns regarding questions 1 through 4.

I wouldn't be concerned with those questions unless the transplant fails.

I mean it clearly and directly. What specific point are you asking about?

You won't have to tackle those issues since the drive will work seamlessly with your new setup.

Is this an option? The drive remains unchanged; everything else has been altered.

You're hoping it will work. With Microsoft Office 2016 installed and your drive being a 960 EVO, you're concerned about wiping all data before a fresh installation.
