Plex Media Server functions more like a software tool, serving as an extension for certain file server platforms like FreeNAS. It supports clients across a variety of devices including iOS, Windows, Android, Xbox, PS3, Roku, and more.

Technically there is an unofficial way to install media center into windows 10. It requires a modded version though. Personally I wish they'd bring it back. Now that I've learned there actually are good TV tuners out there and with the 4k netflix and the 4k blu ray player coming out that requires kaby lake and therefore windows 10, it really sucks not having media center to compliment the rest of the htpc.

According to Microsoft telemetry, usage of Media Center was minimal and DVD playback remained rare. The launch of Windows 8 coincided with the introduction of start laptops lacking disk drives and the rise of Windows-powered tablets, prompting demands for a more affordable OS. Consequently, Microsoft discontinued Media Center and its related codecs, which were paid for by Microsoft, including the DVD codec. When available, it was included as an optional feature in the Pro edition. Despite this, Microsoft provided a free version for a limited time when the operating system was initially released.
