I encountered an issue today that required hours of searching and testing to resolve. I wrote this post to help locate the answer on Google.

The Problem: Boot times increased significantly—ranging from 10 to 100 seconds—and became extremely slow almost instantly. The "starting windows" animation remained visible for longer than usual. An error message appeared with Event ID 110 in Windows Performance Diagnostics (Viewer). The error message read: "Session manager initialization caused a slowdown in the startup process."

The Cause: Your system has a storage drive larger than 2TB, or you have more than 2TB of total storage. You recently added it if this is the first time you've noticed the slow boot issue.

The Solution: Apply Windows Hotfix KB2505454. You can search for it online or visit the official support page at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2505454. If that doesn’t resolve it, try KB2510636 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2510636). I installed both simultaneously and believe the first one is effective.

The Process: Click "Hotfix Download Available," accept the terms, choose the appropriate option, enter your email twice, solve the captcha, check your inbox for a link, click it, download the file to a designated location on your OS drive, open Microsoft Update, click Run, and follow the prompts. Restart your system—boot times should return to normal!

Hope this assists you!

Did you resolve the issue or are you ready to attempt another fix? I don’t understand the problem, but based on Microsoft...

Demetria's advice for Windows 8/8.1/10 issues: (Fill in the blank) Solution: Clear the boot disk and set up an operating system outside the Windows 8 range. Windows 7 and Ubuntu work well as solid replacements for the problematic version.

Good luck, please confirm if it works. Which HDD did you install? I was worried about needing a full reset after my PSU/motherboard/CPU issues. Fortunately, I found a solution using Google Skillz and didn’t need to ask here—1Scotty1 handled it well.
