A few days ago, I started my PC and noticed the Ethernet wasn't functioning. In the Device Manager, I checked network adapters and found a warning icon. I opened the Network Adapter (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller) and saw a message saying Windows was still configuring the class settings (Code 56). I've heard this issue might relate to Checkpoint VPN, but I don't have that software or any other VPN installed. I considered it possibly linked to VirtualBox, so I removed it and all my virtual machines, but the problem persisted. I tried installing drivers via USB (my PC lacks Wi-Fi) but couldn't locate the right ones and ended up with 20 PUPs, which I deleted. I really appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks.

I would reinstall Windows from scratch to check the situation. If the problem lies with software or drivers, this usually resolves it quickly and avoids the hassle of repeatedly updating drivers. If that fails, try turning off the network card in the BIOS, restarting into Windows, and then turning it back on to test. If that doesn<|pad|>, try booting a Linux distribution to see if it recognizes the hardware. It might be a dead network card if all else fails.

Does the NIC come pre-installed on the motherboard? Then you'd just need a driver from the board manufacturer's site

I would try it, though I have a lot of items there that I don’t want to lose and I’m not motivated to back it up right now.

Begin with the mobile driver; clearing and reinstalling windows is essentially a final option

I believe the motherboard label is incorrect. It should be Asus M5A78L-M LX V2, not just the name.

It seems the NIC didn't show up after installing the driver. The download link came from a website, but the installation process might have caused an issue. Check USB connection and ensure the driver is correctly installed.

It seems the cost of PCIe NICs is low.
