I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my school laptop and everything functioned properly until recently. I tried switching to Windows from the boot menu, but everything stopped at a black screen with a blinking command prompt. I didn’t worry much at first. After turning it off and booting back into Ubuntu, it worked just fine. I thought maybe there was an issue with either the Windows installation or the MBR. When I returned home, I used the Windows 8 CD to run bootrec.exe /fixmbr from the terminal, rebooted, and still faced the same problem. I’m looking for advice on what might be causing this. I understand everything should be intact since I was able to access files from Ubuntu and safely retrieve my schoolwork, but I’m stuck with a machine that won’t boot Windows or Ubuntu. It just displays the error message. Perhaps it’s a hardware issue or something more serious—I’d like to try fixing it myself or at least understand what went wrong.

It's nice to resolve your own tech issues, isn't it?
