Windows displays a "driver error" for the USB hard drive, and it transfers data at 30 to 40 MB per second.
I observed that connecting my Western Digital USB hard drive triggers a driver error in Windows when navigating to the Bluetooth and other devices settings. Previously, qBittorrent reported an I/O device error while trying to download from that drive. Once unplugged and plugged back in, Windows flagged the drive as problematic and suggested scanning it. Scanning revealed errors, but the warning persisted. Eventually, a severe BSOD appeared with the stop code usbstor.sys, which cleared after a system restart. Post-restart, I experienced driver issues and slow transfer speeds again. Changing cables or ports didn’t resolve the problem. On another PC, instead of a driver error, I received a message stating the driver was unavailable. CrystalDiskInfo confirmed the drive was functional. Running CrystalDiskMark showed normal read speeds (110MB/s) but write speeds of 77 and 107MB/s. The OS details were: Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit (Windows 11 from factory), system age 1 year, OS installed 2 months ago, CPU Ryzen 7 6800H, GPU Radeon RX 6650M, manufacturer HP, model Omen by HP Gaming Laptop 16-n0033dx. I attached a zip file with my test results and a .dmp log from the BSOD event, plus an HTML report from the Windows Performance Monitor taken after a 60-second wait. I attempted to analyze using perfmon /report via command line, but it repeatedly froze on "Collecting data for 60 seconds." HardDriveIssue.zip
I attempted a BIOS update, but it didn’t resolve the issue. In Device Manager it shows as a WD My Passport 2628 USB Device.
