Windows displays a black screen with the cursor after startup.
I have a desktop PC with Windows on an SSD that has been functioning well for more than a year. Recently, I added an HDD and installed Ubuntu on it. During the setup, after installation, I was given the chance to select the operating system to boot from. It operated properly for a few days, but today I started the PC, chose Windows, and left to do other tasks before logging in. Perhaps Windows thought it was a good idea to update because the PC restarted on its own. When I returned, it was back in the boot choice menu; I selected Windows again, but something seemed incorrect. It returned to the boot choice menu, then I chose Windows once more and saw an unusual message. Since this was unexpected, I forced a shutdown so that things could return to normal. Now, when I start the PC and select Ubuntu, it works correctly. However, if I choose Windows, the system freezes on a black screen. If I move the mouse, the cursor functions normally. I tried pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete, but it didn’t help. If I press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B, the cursor moves to the middle of the screen. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should try to resolve this issue? Maybe a method to repair corrupted system files from the BIOS?
Start up in safe mode? Check if booting without the HDD works.
