Windows didn't work for you. Can you give more details?
Hey everyone, I’ve got a tricky issue I’m facing. When setting up my system on a budget, I chose a 60GB Western Digital drive for the OS and a 2TB mechanical for other storage. Over the past two years it’s worked fine—until now. I added about 4TB of Firecuda storage and enabled Windows updates to alert me when new versions were available.
But somehow, even though I disabled automatic updates, the system kept uninstalling SteamVR and replacing it with a partial update file. Eventually, it ran out of space because the update was large. Now my SSD is nearly full, and I can’t delete the leftover incomplete file. Trying to free up a few gigabytes didn’t help much, since it was supposed to let me access an external drive.
Even though I thought I had enough space for updates, it kept asking for another 6GB before the download started. All I could do was clear a bit of space, but it still blocked progress. Now SteamVR won’t load and I can’t update the PC. I’ve checked Windows 10 settings, but everything except core files got cleared. The “Apps & Games” list shows everything on every drive, making it hard to spot the problem.
In the system files, there’s a hibernation file about 3.15GB in size—used when the computer is sleeping. I never put it to sleep, but I’m not sure deleting it would help or cause issues. I also don’t know if removing it affects sleep functionality.
Anyone have suggestions for files that aren’t essential but still take up space in the root drive? I’ve already cleared the “installer2” folder from the NVIDIA folder. Do you know of a way to expand this partition safely, maybe by cloning it and installing it elsewhere? This is really frustrating.
I understand the 60GB drive was small back then, but it’s now causing problems. Reformatting and reinstalling Windows isn’t something I want to do—it could mess up the other 4TB of data that depend on it. Any advice would be a huge relief!
Only used for hibernation or suspending to disk, you can remove it easily. Just search for the exact command on Google. If you clone to a larger drive, you might want a bigger SSD since it’s now affordable. Using something like Windows Storage Spaces or Space Sniper can help reveal hidden space, but a larger SSD is more practical now.
