I've relied on Microsoft Support, which took me roughly a year to have my device fixed. Regardless, my experience with support was disappointing. I understand you're referring to supported operating systems, not warranty assistance—Mainstream means they actively promote and sell the OS, like Windows 7, 8 & 8.1 currently. Extended support involves transitioning from an older version to a newer one, such as when Windows XP was phased out to enable upgrades to 7/8/8.1.

Hey there. The end of widespread backing for a product means Microsoft stops improving it. It doesn’t mean fixes for security or reliability problems won’t still be available. After January 13, 2015, Microsoft will no longer provide non-security hotfixes unless you have an extended support deal. All warranty claims will stop. They won’t accept new features or design changes anymore. When extended support ends, you won’t get any security patches or reliability updates. This happened with Windows XP in April and is set to happen again for Windows Server 2003 on July 15, 2015.

Vista resembles Windows ME; we just try to ignore it.

They were quite outdated and not very reliable.
