I’m a new user and unsure if this is the appropriate forum. Recently, every time I start Steam, it stops functioning at the game library screen and freezes, causing my Windows to close unexpectedly. I'm unable to interact with the program and must restart my computer manually. After several days of self-troubleshooting, I believe either my graphics card is malfunctioning or there’s a conflict between my drivers and Steam. When I disable my graphics card through Device Manager and utilize integrated graphics instead, the issue disappears.

However, I'm now at a standstill. Although I suspect this is the root cause, I don’t know how to fix it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and I can offer further details if necessary. Thank you in advance.

System Details:
Windows 10
Motherboard: Asus z97-A
Memory: 2 x 4GB Ballistix Sport
Processor: i7-4790
Graphics Card: Radeon R9 270X
500W Power Supply
(Please let me know if you require additional information)

Attempt to launch Steam in Safe Mode with Networking and then log in. If it functions during this time, a software conflict is likely present.

Attempt to boot Steam in secure mode with network connectivity and subsequently log in. If it functions during this process, a software incompatibility exists within your system.

Yeah that's one of things I originally tried and it did work in safe mode. That's why I think I've narrowed down to graphics drivers or a my card being shot, it's about 5 years old now. I'm wondering if I should just keep rolling back through available gpu drivers until one works or if I should find a way to scan for damge in my card?

Attempt to remove the graphics card software. Afterward, reboot your computer and allow Windows to install a new graphics driver. Test to see if it resolves the issue.

Do you happen to be employing an afterburner or overclocking utility on your graphics card?

Are there any logs that align with Steam and Windows shutdown events within the computer management event viewer?

Installing the driver from Windows failed, and I am not modifying or boosting my CPU.

I'm uncertain about what information to examine within the Event Viewer. Using Ctrl+F specifically for Steam only yields two entries, both indicating "The following application attempted to prevent shutdown: Steam.exe.”

A user on the Steam discussion board assisted me by instructing me to turn off certain recently added user interface visual effects and hardware acceleration options. They also advised me to fix the game’s folder structure via the Steam download settings—I completed these actions simultaneously, making it unclear which one ultimately resolved the problem. Thank you as well, Fix_that_Glitch!
