It wouldn't function like disconnecting a standard alarm clock or radio that doesn't use batteries from a power source.

Yes, but the batteries aren’t functioning when the laptop is off. When the laptop shuts down, no power reaches it, so it can’t tell time or respond to alarms. This isn’t an exact analogy—I was just trying to illustrate how a clock loses its purpose without power.

The main point is that the Windows alarm relies on software running. When the computer shuts down, the program isn’t active (similar to an alarm clock without power). Because the software isn’t running, the alarm won’t work when the system is off. Some laptops let you schedule startup in BIOS, and if you start it a few minutes before the alarm, it might function. However, there’s a risk of the computer booting up unexpectedly, which could cause problems.

It seems the situation might have been quite severe. The effects were noticeable, though some details are unclear.

It might be possible to turn off the computer automatically afterward to avoid damage

I suppose you can do that but it is still a risk if it doesn't turn itself off again.
