Here’s a fresh take on your situation: I tried to help you with the old W98 setup issues. After booting up, the screen shows a strange IBM logo and then displays two symbols instead of the start menu. I managed three attempts to enter the password, but when I get it wrong, the system stops and says “Wrong password specified.” It’s been a long time since we used a password on this machine. I also couldn’t reach the BIOS settings, though I managed to press F9 repeatedly to see if it would open Security Utility. No luck so far. Anyone have any ideas or resources for this?

Consider clearing the CMOS or relocating the hard drive. You could also try a live Linux installation on a USB stick. (How do you reset CMOS?)

I completely don’t understand. Maybe I came across some information about taking out a battery from a motorboard, but it seems like I only got a brief mention of it!

I don’t have much experience with an old IBM PC, but I think the steps are quite similar. 1) Power off the machine. 2) Disconnect the power cord from the PSU (and other connections if you like). 3) Press and hold the power button repeatedly until the system stops responding, then release it a few more times just to be safe. 4) Open the case. 5) Find the CMOS battery—a small round cell about the size of a quarter. 6) If the motherboard has a reset button, press it and hold for 15-30 seconds, then let go. 7) If there’s no reset button, remove the battery for 15-30 seconds, then put it back. 8) Go through the steps again. This could resolve the issue. If not, I regret any time or effort wasted.

I’m sure I’ll definitely try this once I understand how to open it. But that’s not a problem at all! Appreciate the heads up! I’ll share the updates later!

By disconnecting the battery for half a minute while taking off the power cable. Or by briefly connecting the clear CMOS pins 2 and 3 for a few seconds: blog.thepcmechanic.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/cmos.jpg (the shown image is the standard setup)
