I tested it with two disks and two different ISOs. I plan to install Xubuntu using just 60 percent of the drive first, then move to the remaining 40 percent. Windows 98 can only access around 47 GBs of the drive anyway. I’m hoping this will work.

The HDD could be too large. Windows 98 won't work on drives bigger than 137GB. Usually, 40GB works best.

Have you explored running a Linux distribution alongside Linux Wine? Drakan might be able to do that.

If you're using IDE, there might be a reasonably priced option available on eBay. I recently purchased a 40GB TravelStar for $14, which has been dependable and quiet so far.
