Consider the risks and benefits of each choice. Purchasing an activation key might not guarantee your files remain untouched, while upgrading to Windows 10 could reset everything you currently use. For entering a new activation code in 8.1 Pro, it should work if accepted, but switching to Windows 10 would likely erase your existing software and games.

It's not a single free year; you only get one year to upgrade, yet you retain the license indefinitely. Your software should work just like any regular Windows update.

The Windows 10 upgrade is a permanent change. You get one year from when it’s released to confirm it works as intended.

It's similar to setting up a fresh operating system. That's precisely what you're doing.

It's merely a change in your existing Windows key. Even after upgrading, once the key expires it will be considered outdated.

Having an OEM key ensures you receive an upgrade while keeping the original format intact. It does not require a full reinstall.

Most users plan to upgrade first, then perform a complete reinstall when Microsoft drops a new ISO. I prefer a full clean install with a brand-new operating system over simply upgrading and resetting everything.
