i use a basic laptop for coding tasks and just reset it recently to clear out some unnecessary files i’ve gathered over time. everything worked fine at first, compilers ran smoothly. a few days back i saw windows asking for an update to 8.1, thinking they fixed some issues with browsers, so i tried it. a couple of weeks later (around 8-9) it’s still running, but i have to leave tomorrow and bring it along. it kept charging all night, so i thought it was fine, but later i realized it was still loading parts of the update. i just let it finish (it was about 95% done). finally everything loaded properly, and i opened a c++ compiler to work. here’s the problem: whenever i open an app or click the taskbar (even just a blank space), it jumps back to the home screen—like my background was green and it was just a screen flash. then it loops between startup and shutdown every few minutes. i tried resetting it and restoring backups, but when i opened the control panel it showed a bug and made the system unusable. i’m okay with a full reinstall or wiping the OS, as long as i still have the original software. if that’s not an option, installing ubuntu would be my last resort. any advice would mean a lot to me, especially since i’m really new to this stuff.

It's just one of the potential issues during an upgrade—it's uncommon, but possible. It seems something might have failed or an incompatible driver was involved. The best approach would be to begin fresh with a clean installation.

No boot disk available, and I’m not even certain where the OEM details are.

Windows can be reinitialized from its default configuration. Recovery tools are available by starting the system in safe mode, then restarting while keeping the Shift key pressed until the interface appears. Windows 8 offers multiple methods to restore or recover data.

I restarted my computer while holding shift and it loaded, and I accessed the control panel, but then it froze completely. I tried again and got the same outcome—uncertain if I wasn’t in safe mode or if something else prevented it.

It seems you're referring to needing to explore several choices with a blue background.

It seems you're describing a peculiar method of turning off your computer. Instead of following the usual steps, you shut it down by pressing and holding the Shift key while also using the Restart option repeatedly.

As you mentioned, tapping on anything feels like an instant crash.
