Hello, I switched from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro on July 29th and performed a clean install the same day. Initially, Windows 10 wouldn't activate without any steps, but after logging into my MS account, it worked. Once I removed the key from my MS account and signed in through the store, everything functioned properly. I'm trying to locate the key for my Windows 10 version to prevent issues during future clean installs. I followed a guide that suggested the key differs from my previous Windows 8.1, and I'm wondering if I can discard the old key (8.1) and retain only the new one after upgrading to 10. Many people on this forum say the key changes, but I've read it doesn't always stay the same. Thanks, Tarzan.

Everyone possesses the same key, and for future updates the key is irrelevant. It remains linked to your motherboard/MS account.

It's a fresh key, your previous W8.1 key should no longer work. You won't be able to use the old W8.1 code now.
