I’m planning to purchase a Windows 8.1 copy for my new build. I want to know the distinctions between OEM and standard editions, how the installation process differs, and whether I can use an external USB optical drive during setup.

You can install using an external drive. An OEM version is linked to your specific hardware, preventing you from using the same key elsewhere. A retail version allows you to modify the computer and change the associated key.

Watch out for counterfeit OEM certificates that expire after a short period, since many sellers on platforms like eBay are aware this won’t be detected until after the cutoff date.

It seems like you're planning to complain about needing to contact support again.

Online activation seems to function properly when Windows is excluded from the other device.
