It seems you could be running many background programs or having excess bloatware. There’s also a chance your hard drive might have viruses, though that’s less likely after installing Windows but still possible. I’ve got Windows 8.1 set up on my MacBook Pro via dual boot, and when I switch to Windows at the desktop with nothing running, it uses between 1 and 2 gigabytes of RAM out of my total 16.

The installation is complete, no viruses detected. The most demanding task was launching Google Chrome, which took about 30MB.

But how many of those processes are active? It adds up quickly. You could check the task manager for about 3 to 5 minutes to spot any spikes in RAM or CPU usage. Even a brief surge lasting 1 to 2 seconds repeatedly will impact performance. If you were my situation, I’d uninstall each program one by one. That way, you can identify which one actually helps.

Then it becomes only a few Windows programs using very little space.

Did you just construct this machine? If yes, were the RAM slots arranged properly for dual-band operation?

I made it some time ago, I recently upgraded by putting an SSD in. I just set up the operating system there, the RAM is in the right slots. I checked the running processes once more and whenever I open Chrome 4, it launches and uses around 30 MB each time.

It seems you could have ended up with a lot of unnecessary files if Chrome started launching multiple processes. As I mentioned before, uninstall the programs you downloaded after installing Windows fresh, then visit Ninite.com to re-download everything without the extra bloatware. The site installs everything cleanly, removing most of the unwanted software. If you don’t already have an antivirus, Ninite offers a free, solid option.

I was running AVG 2015 but it seemed to be adding to the issue, so I removed it. It didn’t really help much, so I’ll reinstall it. After turning my PC back on, memory usage dropped to around 30% while playing a game on Steam at the same time. I thought it might be related to my drivers, so I’m updating everything to versions optimized for Windows 8.1 (especially Intel Rapid Storage technology) and hoping that resolves the problem. I was using my PC just fine the previous night, so the only possible cause is AVG 2015.

You haven't encountered any problems with AVG on your Mac, and I don't know where you obtained your version from.
