Lol, it wasn't free. It might have come with the laptop, but the same model or similar specs likely existed at a lower price by using a different version. I actually got my desktop without an operating system just to cut costs really big.

It was a gift for me, not for my dad. He installed Linux on that laptop, which made him seem like a cool person.
