Hello everyone, I’m using Windows 8.1 on my laptop with 16GB RAM, a 480GB SSD for the operating system, and a 1TB HDD for backup storage. When I first got the machine, I wasn’t familiar with the OS since I only had Windows 7 Pro 64-bit before. A little flag at the bottom right of the taskbar would blink and show a clock. After some time, I realized it was performing automatic maintenance, which slowed down my laptop significantly—especially when loading web pages. Eventually, I discovered that part of the maintenance was defragmenting the HDD. Since I have an SSD with the OS installed, defragmentation isn’t necessary and could shorten its lifespan. So I turned off the auto-maintenance in the task scheduler. It restarted itself several times. I disabled it again yesterday afternoon. Every few days, I check for Windows updates, and I see 38 important updates listed. I clicked install, waited, and after a moment it said no updates needed. Confused! Then I tried installing them again, then turned auto-maintenance back on, and it downloaded everything properly. So, does this mean that users of Windows 8.1 are forced to run automatic maintenance and defragmentation, even though some have SSDs? It feels a bit unfair, especially since I’ve set idle times and Trim is enabled. Catch 22—I hope this helps! Thanks, Les

Trim works similarly to defragmentation for traditional storage devices. It enhances SSD performance by maintaining efficiency and removing unnecessary data.
