windows 8 to 8.1 pro product key
windows 8 to 8.1 pro product key
I need to get that old laptop back online for our network. It’s a clean Toshiba Satellite S955 with Gen3 I5 and Windows 8.1 PRO, intended for the new HR staff. The main issue is missing the admin password—it still carries the old domain security, so it won’t connect to the current domain. Only a standard user account exists, making it unusable. The license is active, but without the product key sticker (just a WIN8 square), access is blocked. I attempted to read the key using tools like Produkey or Magical Jelly Bean, but they failed due to user restrictions. I tried opening the hard drive with a VBS script to extract a product key from registry files, but it didn’t work. The only workaround was restoring the machine via F11, which switched it to Windows 8 Home and revealed a different key. It seems the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 might have erased or altered the original activation details. I’m considering cloning the drive with Clonezilla to restore the 8.1PRO license and activating it again. For the domain, I’m unsure how to add it back without the correct credentials. Any advice on recovering the license or bypassing the admin password?
When the current setup uses UEFI, it must be saved there. This enables a fresh OS installation that activates automatically afterward.
I was expecting this but it didn’t happen, even though the older 8.1PRO version was enabled, the UEFI only showed 8.0 home.
Prepare to restart everything. Obtain a digital key for a modest fee. Proceed with the update.
