I’m thinking about purchasing Windows 8, specifically the Student version, since it’s more affordable and fits my budget. I’m planning to use it mainly for gaming, though not entirely. Are there any limitations or downgrades I should be aware of? Thanks!

I believe everything will work as expected; you won’t find encryption by default. Most functions can be enabled through applications. It might help to use Windows 8.1 if that’s available.

Where do you attend classes? I reviewed my college—similar to a high school in the US—in DreamSpark, and I qualified for a Win 8.1 offer without any issues.

In the UK you can purchase the Win 8.1 Pro with a student discount for £50, identical to the regular price of £120 but reduced in cost.
