8.1 using a traditional shell. Skip Windows 7 unless you absolutely despise the old GUI so much you can't run it on your machine. With classic shell, you never need to look at or interact with it.

Choose Windows 8.1 without the classic shell. I’ve used Windows 7 before, and after installing 8.1 on my PC, it works well. It’s a great upgrade—just take your time to adjust and you’ll be comfortable.

I originally chose 7 before 8.1. 8 was difficult at first, but 8.1 offered significant improvements through heavy optimization. I also run a shell on my system to bypass the start screen, as it opens my desktop faster.

I’d pick 7 if forced between the two options for a new build. Most folks focus on the e-peen boost that 8 provides in FPS. If someone wants extra gains, it’s me with my 5770, and I wouldn’t go for 8 with a 10' pole.
