Windows 11 suddenly halts and becomes unresponsive, freezing all functions
Hello everyone, I’m facing an unusual problem where my system suddenly stops working properly. It often begins when the mouse scroll wheel fails, followed by loss of click or close functionality for apps. Then the live wallpaper freezes and RGB effects become stuck. Eventually, the whole machine becomes unresponsive. The only solution is to press the power button and force shut down. All drivers are current, including Windows 11, and I’ve updated the BIOS too. I recently reinstalled Windows because of this same issue, hoping it would resolve things. I’m starting to think the problem might be linked to faulty RGB software, since my lighting effects also freeze during these moments. I have Corsair iCUE and Lian Li L-Connect 3 installed. My PC specs: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, Asus ROG Strix B550, Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB (8GBx4 @3200Mhz), Gigabyte Vision RTX 3070 OC Rev 2.0, Corsair CX750F PSU. Thank you all for your help!
It could involve many factors. Possibilities include faulty GPU drivers (DDU issues, reinstall carefully following steps), failing RAM, a dead motherboard or SSD, or problems with the RGB software.
First, execute SFC/DISM—possibly during reinstallation something broke.
Second, note how often this occurs.
Third, check the Event Viewer for any errors; ignore the Kernel Power event as it’s just a forced restart.
Fourth, run chkdsk and memtest86 to verify SSD or RAM health.
Finally, monitor your temperatures.
Thanks for the details. It seems there’s no clear pattern in the failures—sometimes it lasts weeks, other times it happens frequently. The Event Viewer only records a Kernel Power event, and CHKDSK shows no issues. Temperatures are within normal ranges, and the drive health is good. Could these factors be contributing to the problem?
Hello, thanks for your response. I have a similar question. My boot drive is a Samsung 980 Pro, and CrystalDiskInfo indicates it's at 81% health. Still, I haven’t seen any performance problems—PC starts up quickly, and I can transfer files in and out without issues.
Consider running DDU as suggested. It's usually the simplest approach and often helps with odd GPU problems. Next, try memtest86, just as he recommended. After that, reinstall Windows without any RGB software installed. If everything works, test a game, then install iCUE, add more RGB tools if needed, and continue testing.
Thanks, I'll go through these steps and try to identify the problem.
From the sounds of it, there is *some* time between first symptoms and full lock. If that is the case, one thing to try would be, when the first symptoms appear, try restarting Windows Explorer. This is easy to do from Task Manager. If you don't have an explorer window already open, the process should be way the the bottom and notably, when you click it, the End Task button becomes a Restart button.
