Windows 11 File Sharing Not Working
Windows 11 File Sharing Not Working
I'm not sure if anyone can assist with this problem. I regularly use file sharing to move games and files between my main system and my mini PC. Over the past few years, I've been constantly battling Windows and tweaking settings just to transfer those files. Recently, I've spent 4-5 hours online trying everything to resolve it. It's completely broken for me. Yet, the laptop I just bought for a friend worked perfectly—first time signing in with the right credentials and achieving the fastest speeds I've ever seen over file sharing (100-200 Mbps). Other systems or network drives max out at around 70 Mbps. The only difference between the laptop and my other rigs is that Microsoft automatically installed Windows 11 Home Edition without my input. All my other systems run Windows 11 Pro. I'm stuck at a dead end and feeling really frustrated. Do you know what might be going on or can you guide me to the right place?
It might simply be a hardware limitation. The upper bound for data transfer in a 1 gigabit setup is around 125 megabytes, making it difficult to exceed 110 MB. Without a 2.5, 5, or 10Gb connection on both sides, reaching 200 MB won't be possible. Eventually, your storage device could become the bottleneck instead of the network.
It's not the performance issue; the file transfer is completely failed and can't connect to the other computer anymore.
Ensure "Data and Printer Sharing" is activated in your adapter configuration. Set the adapter to a private network and confirm both devices belong to the same workgroup. Occasionally, the SMB authentication may drop; click the network option in the left explorer panel, locate the other machine, and access the shared folder from there.
I've encountered a similar problem too; the only workaround that helped was turning on the older SMB protocol via the control panel, programs menu, enabling/disabling components, specifically SMB1.0. This approach carries security risks but functioned in my case. Additionally, you can adjust your Windows edition by modifying the product key under System > Activation and selecting the Windows Pro edition key. It worked well on Windows 7 and 8.1.
It seems the previous attempt with the older SMB didn't resolve the issue either.
