The update assistant on Windows 10 sometimes fails to complete installations, causing the same cycle to repeat. Try restarting your PC after the download finishes, or check for any pending updates manually. If issues persist, consider resetting settings or reinstalling Windows.

Recent changes in Windows 10 aren't performing well, probably due to Microsoft. Identifying which update fails to install is the next step.

I don’t recall the exact year, but I removed all updates to prevent automatic restarts.

We have officially reached version 1709. Based on my understanding, Microsoft likely only thoroughly tested the previous Windows release before this one, not earlier versions, assuming updates would apply universally. If the upgrade doesn’t succeed, it’s usually due to driver incompatibility or conflicting security software—especially if you’re using something other than Windows Defender. Ensure all drivers (network, chipset, audio) are up-to-date, remove any existing antivirus or security programs, restart, and retry. If needed, use the Media Creation Tool to install a fresh Windows 10 update. If that fails, boot from a USB with the latest Windows 10 setup and attempt the upgrade there. If all else fails, repeat the media tool process and choose to keep only essential data. You’ll need to reinstall everything afterward.

Sure, I'll take care of it. Since I won't be handling any AV files, I might just reinstall Windows after that.

New visuals and additional drivers are installed, and the update is underway. Yay!

The update process won't erase your files unless you enable a backup option. It typically only updates Windows without deleting existing data.

Avoid any action unless necessary. In the most extreme case, everything might be relocated into a folder named: Windows.old. Still, consider backing up your data just in case you encounter issues with a failing drive.
