I left my PC running for about a week and it’s been acting odd lately. I can still move the cursor but can’t power it off or restart. It won’t even load the startup screen, and the power button isn’t responding. Any program I try to open becomes unresponsive, the control panel won’t open, and the task manager freezes. No suspicious software is using many system resources, and my antivirus is still active but doesn’t show any alerts. I’m really confused about what to do now and don’t know who else might have faced the same problem.

No, I did not hold the power button for that duration.

It didn’t function as expected, but pressing and holding caused it to shut down entirely. It appears to be operating normally so far. Uncertain how a full shutdown was achieved.

Tip; avoid keeping computers on for long periods. Running them constantly can lead to issues such as this appearing. Constant operation is harmful to hardware, especially drives that spin unnecessarily with frequent reads and writes, reducing their lifespan. The only device I keep running is my server since its OS is built for ongoing use. Still, I sometimes need to restart it due to unexpected problems. TLDR; power down your computer when possible—it's healthier for the system and prevents such problems.
