It seems anyone who purchased Windows 8 receives Windows 10 at no cost.
It refers to Windows 10 since the numbers 7, 8, and 9 are associated with it.
I've spent several hours in the Technical Preview... and it's already been updated. So far, everything looks good to me. The refreshed design, the redesigned system icons, metro apps functioning on Windows, and the hybrid start/metro interface are all impressive. The new icons adopt a minimal style that blends well with Windows, and it should also work smoothly on mobile devices. Given Microsoft's push to merge desktop and mobile experiences, this makes logical sense. Under the hood, I'm still figuring out the kernel changes or details like address space layout. I haven't tested boot times, comparisons with other VMs, or even my Windows 8 laptop yet, but I'm working on it. Some features I really like include the fact that Metro apps now run in a windowed mode (unless on mobile) and behave like third-party software. Microsoft has finally caught up with Linux, supporting multiple desktops where you can keep windows/apps open. I haven't explored much yet, but so far it seems to just help organize windows without changing the background or icons. The new snapping functionality—two, three, or four ways—is a nice boost for productivity. Unfortunately, Cortana isn't available yet; she wasn't ready for the preview, but I'm looking forward to it. As for things I don't like, the charms bar now only uses a key combo (win + c), which feels limiting. At least the old method of dragging to corners isn't working in my VM. Overall, aside from that, the main issue has been the complete overhaul of the PC settings menu. It's been reorganized so much that it's confusing, but I suppose they did it to improve things. So far, I haven't encountered any bugs—just one crash, which I forced to see if it matched the Windows 8/8.1 experience. I expect a score of around 10 when it releases, though I think I'll wait a few months to adjust and figure out what changed. TL;DR: Love most features, but sad about the reorganized settings menu.
