Facing difficulties with restoring a system image to a new storage device on one of your machines. You have a main computer that rarely sees use and another that needs more space. The idea is to remove the 1TB drive from the family machine and swap it for a smaller one you found online, which works fine when used in its original setup. These older drives (from an Athalon X64 and Core 2 Duo systems) still have standard SATA ports. You’ve successfully created system images on the main computer before, but neither of these new drives is functioning properly. You’re encountering errors about insufficient disk space for the image file—156.7GB versus the expected size. When you tried a 200GB drive that was actually closer to 180-190GB, it worked, so the issue might be with the drive size or formatting. The 320GB drive has enough room, but you’re unsure if it’s compatible. You’re considering bringing back the 1TB drive for better storage, especially since your single SSD is no longer sufficient for all your games.

This step is included in the overall workflow. A dedicated guide confirms it. Previously, minor issues appeared on the WD blue drive during setup, but it wasn’t necessary this time. If it matters, there’s a clear method to handle it. I’m also using a large external 4TB WD drive to keep the image safe during the transfer process.

The system image might have taken a copy of the empty area from your previous drive. You’d have to restart the image process and instruct it to capture only the active space...
