Windows 10 release for May 2019, version 1903
Windows 10 release for May 2019, version 1903
Last night I visited Microsoft’s website and applied the Spring 2019 update. I really appreciate the new light theme (though I’ll likely stick with dark mode) and I’m thrilled about Cortana being separate from the search bar now. There are a few minor adjustments, but the biggest observation was performance. I haven’t experienced Windows 10 running so smoothly before. Usually I’m careful about updating right away (especially on Windows), waiting to see if others report issues, but my system has been quite unstable after just a couple of updates—so I thought, “Why not?” If I had simply gone to settings and clicked “Update Now,” nothing would have happened because they’re rolling out slowly. You can still download it from their site if you wish. I believe this rollout is being done gradually so they can identify and fix any bugs before a wider release. This update seems to be more than a month behind schedule. The update a few months ago severely impacted my gaming performance. I was achieving around 50 FPS in GTAV on an RTX 2080 at 1440p, but now I’m seeing between 90 and 120 FPS. Beyond gaming, the overall user experience feels much faster. Just press the start button and you’ll notice a noticeable improvement. I hope Microsoft continues this approach for public use.
I still need to take a look. It looks like the update wasn’t applied to my Windows Update, but I might try a manual install (I did that for 1809). Unlike most users, I didn’t encounter any issues with 1809 and really liked the new dark theme. Let’s see how 1903 performs on my system.
I'm not sure what people do incorrectly, but I've upgraded Windows to version 1903 across four machines with various setups and it worked fine.
I've reviewed 1903 and encountered some challenges. I rolled back to 1809 because I didn't face any issues before, as my Windows 10 updates since 2015 were smooth. The main concerns were latency problems affecting real-time audio work, which isn't ideal for music production. Additionally, the taskbar with auto-hide had several issues that rarely happened to me—like rendering problems and slow response times.
