I think this might be a basic question, but I wanted to verify before spending money. I discovered a nearby store that sells Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit for $50 less than the official site, but it’s only available on a DVD. I’m doubtful about the cheaper Windows keys I’ve seen elsewhere online. Since my new system won’t have an optical drive, can I still make a Windows 10 installer on a USB and use the serial number from the DVD to verify? I assume I’m paying for the license rather than the storage method of the OS.

Just get the ISO file directly, or pay around fifty for an unofficial DVD and still end up needing the Microsoft version later. It all comes down to how much you value saving money versus avoiding hassle.

Consider getting the ISO by downloading it or visit a nearby e-waste center or shop, and inquire about borrowing a drive at no cost. They usually won’t agree to give one away.

You'll download the ISO file to your USB drive and likely purchase a standard license from Microsoft's official store.
