There are whispers suggesting that 8-core chips might outshine 4-core ones with Direct X 12 when Windows 10 arrives soon. I recently swapped my 8-core unit for an Intel i7 4970K, so I’m curious if this is just speculation. Of course, rumors can be misleading.

No, not necessarily. Performance depends on the task and system configuration.

You're likely using an FX-8xx processor, and the i7 (8 cores) performs well with it.

He seems to be referring to a comparison between 8350 and 4790K.

If the system used an 8350 with eight cores and DX12 supports eight threads, the 4790k remains the best choice.

I believed he was referring to a 5960x versus 4690k comparison.

I used the 8-core 8350 and switched it for the Intel i7 4970k. According to the benchmarks, the latter performed better.

These processors offer only four cores with eight threads, not the full eight cores advertised.

Reiterating the points made earlier, AMD chips won't make a significant difference. They might run slightly smoother in DX12 projects compared to older versions, but they still fall short of an i7's performance.

DX12 doesn’t automatically boost CPU performance. It seems some believe it helps, but only in specific situations. It works only when the game is limited by draw-call issues, and even then, it provides no benefit.
