I turned off my computer last night. I’m sure I did so sometime during the middle of the night when the screen turned on. I could see the light through my sheet. When I woke up, I was blind and needed to put on my glasses. Windows was updating and said it was almost done. Around 3 a.m., I realized I shouldn’t be plugged in and had to shut off the power supply. Is this normal? Should I get used to it?

PC stayed on instead of powering off. I once faced a similar situation where my machine displayed blue lights and all ten fans reached maximum speed when it started up at 2 AM for updates. It felt intense, like a blue jet launching right beside my bed...

The system remained active, it was placed into sleep mode. Windows 10 will handle updates automatically if you maintain the install. The operating system will apply patches and restart according to your preferences. In Settings, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, here you can adjust your working hours. Under Start > Maintenance, select it and choose Security, then Maintenance to set your preferred maintenance times. Personally, I prefer a very quiet setup—no RGB lights or any visual distractions—and I turn off the screen once work is done. This allows Windows to function smoothly without interrupting me.

Allowing your PC to wake up automatically from sleep helps it handle tasks like defragmentation, virus scans, and updates efficiently. This ensures it operates at its best during your regular usage times.

It could have been bothershing at 3 in the morning, but I wouldn’t have turned it off while updating... Just power down the screen instead.

Could you confirm if an automatic backup exists?

Windows usually installs a new version before applying updates, though this isn<|pad|>. It’s not perfect. Avoid turning off the power entirely unless absolutely necessary—like when you’re dealing with a virus attack. Disconnecting during an update can damage the OS, forcing a complete reset and reinstall.
