Manual deletion removes the item directly, while regular deletion uses automated processes. One is more precise, the other faster.

Don't stress, the few tech experts who don't have to stay updated are retirees. It's hard to master everything, and whether you can remove Windows.old isn't a top concern since it rarely appears and a simple search will show you how to use Disk Cleanup.
