You recently set up Windows 10 on your HP Desktop, but when it starts, you encounter an error saying the installation couldn't finish. You're attempting to upgrade from Windows 7 using a USB drive, but you want to install without formatting the backup drive you made. The BIOS information is noted. Thank you for reaching out for assistance.

Have you attempted the actions recommended? Absolutely, you should be able to simply upgrade your Windows instead of replacing it entirely.

It might be restricted due to the HP layer. I tried fixing a similar issue by swapping an HDD for an SSD in an HP laptop and cloning it. I wasn’t able to resolve it, but perhaps someone can help find a workaround.

If upgrading Windows 7 from a Windows 10 USB key didn't work, there might be an issue with your system. You may need to start from a DVD, Recovery DVD, or the Windows 10 installation disc, using repair options when encountering problems during USB boot. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options and try restoring the system to a previous state. If that doesn't help, use bootrec to fix the boot directory. For safety, back up your data with a bootable tool or clone software. Restoring or performing a clean install can take time without experience, but a 120GB SSD with data migration is another option.
