Hey there,
Your Windows 8.1 setup is a bit outdated. Whether you get a one-year license or a lifetime depends on the version you're using. Check your product key or contact support for details. Let me know if you need help! 8

For one year, you'll receive a chance to upgrade from Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 to Windows 10. This offer remains valid indefinitely.

For a year we might keep it, but then they take it away from us? They argued this would stop piracy.

Upgrade options are available within a year after Windows 10 releases, but after that it remains your permanent choice.

You receive it permanently. The period during which you can upgrade at no cost lasts a year, but after that you must already own Windows 10 and never have to pay again.

Microsoft states that devices running Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 8.1 Mobile can switch to Windows 10 at no cost during its initial year of release. These systems will remain supported with Windows 10 until the device's "supported life time." The discussion around what this means is ongoing, especially regarding how "supported life time" is defined and what Microsoft intends with the new "additional services" introduced alongside Windows 10. Many assume customers receive a free upgrade, but there are concerns about potential extra charges for services previously included in earlier operating systems. I'm keeping my perspective open until more details emerge.
