Hi, I upgraded all my computers to Windows 10 Pro except one, which had a Windows 7 home key. Since then, Microsoft updates have been consuming my slow 1MB/s connection. I’ve tried a few fixes: turning off driver updates via Windows Update, setting the connection to metered, and disabling P2P updates on the local network. Only some Windows 10 updates work there, not drivers or Office updates. I also considered stopping the Windows update service entirely, but that would compromise security. I’m worried my connection is broken. Thanks for your help!

Consider moving to Windows 7, voice criticism about automatic updates wherever possible, and if enough folks speak up, could pressure M$ to make changes.

By then it feels like 1984 is unavoidable, after all—switching to Linux is possible, but gaming isn’t over yet.

Halt the "windows update" service while in use, then restart and allow it to proceed afterward. You’ll be promptly refreshed.
