Your Windows 10 installation remains intact even without the activation key. You can still upgrade your motherboard and CPU, though you'll need to reinstall the OS. There are methods to transfer Windows 10 to a new system without using the key, such as using a USB drive with the ISO file or leveraging built-in recovery tools.

Windows are available for less than twenty dollars, while your new board windows come free, though they may have a water mark.

Sure, it should support Windows 10 in addition to BIOS. Whether you need a key depends on your specific setup and requirements.

It's a used setup, which means I didn't link it to a Microsoft account

It's not an issue. You can connect your local account to a Microsoft account as well. Simply create the Microsoft account on the site and link it via the control panel. There are also guides available on the Microsoft website.

When you sign in to Microsoft, your Windows key remains valid. Office also supports this functionality. (Linked too)
