Hey there, I recently installed a new SSD and shared my experience about reinstalling Windows 10 on it. Followed the steps, downloaded the installation media from Microsoft, created a Windows 10 USB, and everything worked smoothly. Still faced some issues though—something always seems to go wrong. In another post, someone mentioned that the product key would be stored on the motherboard and that after the fresh install, Microsoft servers would replace it automatically. But this didn’t happen, and it hasn’t for the past five days. I haven’t wiped the old drive yet. How can I retrieve my previous key to activate the new Windows and avoid buying another one? My old drive started with Windows 8, and I did a free upgrade to Windows 10 some time ago. Need your help.

I need to reach out to Microsoft since upgrading from an older version required contacting them. They mentioned that modifying components might prevent Windows from activating. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...90a?auth=1 " Q: What occurs when I alter the hardware setup of my Windows 10 device? A: When your Windows 10 hardware changes notably (such as a motherboard replacement), the system may need re-activation. This mirrors past versions like Windows 7 and 8.1. The free upgrade incentive won’t work in cases where hardware updates reset activation. Hope this clarifies things.

I faced the same issue with my laptop. I restored Windows 8.1 using a System Recovery image I had saved, which included the key, and then upgraded to Windows 10.

I reached out to Microsoft Tech Support the previous night, and they advised me that they couldn’t offer any other solutions except a new $200 Windows 10 Pro license. That’s not great.

Just to check, did you upgrade to Windows 10 prior to doing the clean install? If you upgrade Windows 10 should licence against your motherboard (like OEM licencing), meaning you won't need to put a key in when you reinstall, it should activate with Microsofts servers against your motherboard. If you had not already upgraded you will need to do this before the clean install. If you still have your HDD then you can simply boot that and do the upgrade, otherwise you will need to reinstall your original OS (Windows 7 or 8.1). Please get back to us with this info, thanks

I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 on my old HDD, but the activation data didn’t transfer from Microsoft servers. I had to troubleshoot by booting up the old drive and using Belarc Advisor, which provided detailed info about my system, including product keys. I entered my old key on the SSD during installation and it activated successfully!

It's great to hear it went smoothly. I wasn't informed that Microsoft permitted using an older key during setup. Upgrading was necessary to ensure a clean reinstall functioned properly. Excellent fix—this is helpful for future reference, thanks!
